turn off Message Received notifications

I already get a little red dot on the messages icon when I get a message. Why do I need to Mark As Read every message? It's incredibly annoying to see "You got a message!" And think maybe you've been cat for something, and it's just that project with 30 people in it and someone says "hello" and then everyone else says hello back, and you have to clear out all these worthless notifications.
